Kuba Shahnazarli Rug
CODE: KUSHAH14
Size: 152x190cm
Size (ft): 4'11"x6'2"
Area:  2.88 m2
Density: 170 000 knots per square meter
Dyes: 100% natural dyes: madder, spurge / euphorbia, indigo, pomegranate rinds
Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, wool warps and cotton wefts
Hand knotted in Azerbaijan
Design: Three conjoined sky blue and golden yellow diamond medallions surrounded by madder red gubbas (dome) are ranged the length of an azure field sparsely embellished with green-ivory cruciform-patterned rectangles; a polychrome interlock bird design fills the golden main border, flanked between red and dark blue floral-repeat minor borders. A striking ‘op art’ effect in the crisp medallion designs is pleasingly balanced by the attractive range of colours deployed in the main interlock border. Latif Kerimov attributes an item with a closely related border approach and a similar conjoined-medallion field to the village of Arjiman in Shirvan district of Azerbaijan.
