Borchaly (so called Bordjalou) rug with a tree of life motif

Size: 141x175cm

Size (ft): 4'7"x5'8"

Area: 2.46 m2

Density: 115 000 knots per square meter, totally ~280 000 knots

Colors: red, many shades of variegated green, sage green, aubergine, purple, royal blue, navy blue, dark medium blue, yellow, ivory, dark brown, medium brown.

Dyes: madder, weld (Reseda Luteola), indigo, pomegranate skins, walnut husks, onion skins (wefts), natural dark brown sheep wool, natural ivory sheep wool

Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, ivory wool warps and light red wool wefts (two shots, dyed with onion skins and madder powder). 1cm of flatwoven kilim ends at both sides. - wool on wool

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Pile height: 0.6cm

Ends: triangular plaited fringes.

Design: The shaded madder red field with a large "Tree of Life" motif in the field. The tree occupied a semantically important position both in the world-outlook and in the ritual of Turks. In the epics of Turkic peoples the tree was the center of life which functioned as an orientation point in time and space: many epic themes concentrate around the tree, principal events and decisive encounters of epic heroes take place there.

The main border carries the so called "calyx and leaf" motif.

Inscriptions: tamgas of 24 Oghuz tribes

Between the stepped motives of the main border, the tamgas of the 24 Oghuz tribes (who played an important role in the ethnogenesis of the people of Azerbaijan) are placed.
