The distinctive medallion represents an early Central Asian totemic symbol - pairs of reciprocal birds, which can also be found in early Turkish rugs.

The below picture shows a comparison between a corresponding part of the medallion - opposed pairs of birds and the reciptocal bird motif used in the early Anatolian rugs.
