Antique Kazak rug in an indigo blue ground with polychrome boteh / buta motifs

Age: ~1880-90

Size
: 102x170cm

Size (ft): 3'4"x5'6"

Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and red wool wefts.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: The polychrome boteh motifs arranged in a playful manner on a shaded abrashed indigo field. Rare natural colors which can not be seen in late examples - apricot, emerald green, shaded medium indigo, two shades of yellow. Boteh motif might have different meanings in Azerbaijan culture. It may symbolize fertility, drop of water (seed of life), eternal life, pregnancy.
