Antique Karabagh dragon verneh ("sileh") flatweave rug

Size (ft): 6'6"x8'8"

Structure: wool on wool. Warps: red wool; Z2S; wefts: foundation: red wool; Z2S; 1 shoot after each row of soumak; soumak part: wool - Z2S; cotton (white) Z3S

Technique: soumak plain and countered

Description: Made in two panels.

Design: Field: 4 bands of 4 "S' forms in yellow, white and dark blue all filled with small, variously coloured Z shapes; against a madder red ground resulting in a highly graphic composition with a great sense of contrast. S forms here are meant to represent dragons and evidence for this may be seen in the wispy tails and ears of the s forms in this piece. In the top and lower space of each dragon there are three tribal motifs resembling an hourglass. Border: reciprocal arrow heads in blue.
