Antique Heriz rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran, 19th century, 12 ft x 14 ft 09 in (3.66 m x 4.50 m), Nazmiyal Collection

A grand star medallion palmette finials rules the field of this dazzling antique Heriz. The deep blue medallion is surrounded by a dynamic mesh of abstract vines and flowers on a soft red field, and by vine-filled stepped cornerpieces in khaki tan. The main border consists of a crisply rendered ‘turtle’ vinescroll design set against a soft blue ground that provides the perfect from for the field design. Heriz carpets are famed for their powerful geometric sensibility, but this one is also notable for the precise elegance of its drawing.
