Country:
AZERBAIJAN, Shirvan Area General/Historical
Information:
The name of the carpet derives from the name of a village, Chukhanly,
which is located 13 kilometers far from the south east of Shamakhy Town.
At earlier times, people named it as “Gabristan”, “Maraza” or “Chukhan”.
After second half of 18th century, these carpets received wide popularity
under the name “Chukhanly”. Art
Analysis:
The composition of the central field of Chukhanly carpet has got a lot
similarity with Sor-Sor carpets (also Shirvan group). But it differs from
“Sor-Sor” with its special elements-“Buta”. The decoration of this
“Buta” s, which is located in the central field, is complex. The
leaves that come out from the sides of “Buta”, strengthen decorative
effect of the carpet. Usually
for the carpets with the pattern of Buta, the colors are distributed
unsystematically. But
in Chukhanly carpets, the color of these elements is uniform on a diagonal
way. That is one of the main artistic features of this carpet. The
border ornaments, such as “Horuk”, “Kosa” which is characteristic
to Shirvan carpets, are applied also for Chukhanly carpets. It’s
especially necessary to mention that ancient Azerbaijani carpets, such as
Mugan and Gobystan rendered significant influence on carpets
“Chukhanly”.
