Art
Analysis:
With its dark blue background Syrt Chichi carpets looks like Khyrda Gul
Chichi type of Kuba carpets. But there is a difference between them. In
Syrt Chichi rugs, the elements are closer to each other on central
elements, and there are not many supplementary elements in spite of Khyrda
Gul Chichi carpets. The size of the elements are bigger and they have got
different shape. If "Bashmaq" is the main element of Khyrda Gul
Chichi carpets, "alcha-gul" is the main element of Syrt Chichi rugs.
Alcha gul element can be found in the painting of famous painter Hans Memling.(1433-1494) The Virgin and Child with an Angel, St. George and a
Donor. c. 1470-80. Oil on wood. National Gallery, London, UK
Another element of the central field is octagonal charkh (wheel).
The border of Chichi
carpets consist of (from the inner part) medakhil, zanjira, main and
secondary kayma. The main kayma with black background is used also in
another Kuba carpets, such as Zeyve. But its mostly characteristic to
Chichi carpets. At both sides of main kayma, after two zanjira's, there
are secondary kayma's, which are called "ulduz" (means star).
This is another characteristic of Chichi carpets. And at both sides
of these ulduz's there are medakhil's, local masters call it "mollabashy".
The background of the central filed of Chichi carpets is generally in
dark blue color, and sometimes could be in dark red.
