Antique Zakatala rug with Central Asian motifs, North Azerbaijan, 19th century. Published in Hali Magazine, Issue 78


An example of the finely knotted type of Zakatala district rug, probably dating from the second half of the 19th century. Its medallions and minor field motifs appear to be of hajli" Kazak inspiration and are used in combination with an archaic Turkic-style main border. Its format is typical of non-commercial rugs that were made for domestic use, rather than the more familiar shape and size of Caucasian carpets made for the export market
