Antique Serapi rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran, late 19th century, 9 ft 09 in X 14 ft (2.77 m X 4.27 m), Nazmiyal Collection


At the center a monumental blue medallion with internal floral detail and projecting red finials floats amidst an ivory ground, surrounded by a sparing corolla of angular vines and palmettes. Grand red cornerpieces fill out the field, utilizing once again a restrained or spare array of stylized vinescroll elements. In place of the customary vinescroll, this unusual piece has a main border of made of octagonal medallions in various different colors with hooked motifs as fillers. Flanking ivory-ground minor borders help to frame the field.
