Three complete Seichur ‘St. Andrew’s Cross’ configurations in tan sienna,
indigo, crimson and ivory fill an ivory field, all within a single broad
Seichur ‘running dog’ border in coral red and mid blue, abrashed to tan at
one end. The ‘infinite repeat’ nature of this best known of Seichur field
arrangements is here unusually apparent; Kerimov records the local name for
this cruciform design is Golluchichi, derived from its four large diagonal
gol (meaning ‘sleeve’) elements. In its tonal approach and use of a single
border, the item resembles the Bennett white ground Seichur, No. 378.
Bennett notes that the so-called ‘running dog’ border meander is more
probably derived from the bird iconography of Caucasian and other Turkic
carpets; its expression here using a light red in place of the more usual
white was possibly determined by the colouring of the field.
