Antique Kuba rug, late 19th century, North East Azerbaijan

Antique Kuba Seychour, Caucasus, late nineteenth century

A dynamic pattern of stylized leaves in staggered rows repeats across the field of this charming antique Kuba Seychour from the Caucasus. Set dramatically against a black ground , the cool blue and autumnal color of the leaves is striated into different tones, and many contain tiny animals or geometric motifs as interior embellishment. Smaller ovals and rectangles appear as space fillers between the leaves. A complex ‘’Kufesque’ border set on an abrashed green an gold ground surrounds the field. The contrast between the meticulous precision of the border and the animated, diagonal drawing of the field gives the carpet an impressive tension and excitement.
