Antique Heriz silk rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran, mid 19th century

Sotheby's May 19, 1984. New York, Lot 174:

"FINE AND IMPORTANT silk HERIZ RUG, Northwestern Persia

mid-19th century. Approximately 6 feet (1.83 m.) x 4 feet 5 inches (1.35 m.)

Directional designs of floral bouquets are found in Persian carpets throughout the 17th-20th centuries. The present example offers charmingly angular floral clusters which nevertheless maintain a high degree of botanical descriptiveness. Please see Beattie, May H., Carpets of Central Persia, World of Islam Festival Publishing Company Ltd., 1976, plates 13 and 14 for period carpets with similar floral clusters. Also see McMullan, Joseph V., Islamic Carpets, plate 28 for similarly angular and effective floral bouquets."

Estimate: $50,000 / 60,000

SOLD: $52,800 including 10% buyer premium
