Caucasian Kuba Zeyve Rug (so called "Lesghi Star" rug)
Code: KUZEY06
Size:
128x169cm
Size (ft):
4'2"x5'6"
Area:  2.16 m2
Density: 170 000 knots per square meter
Dyes: 100% natural dyes: madder, spurge / euphorbia, indigo, pomegranate skins, dyer's weed (Reseda Luteola L.)
Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, wool warps and cotton wefts
Hand Woven in Azerbaijan
Design: Four Lesghi Star medallions in madder red and aqua green are superimposed upon a deep blue field filled with an array of diverse motifs, including scorpion ornaments throughout the field; a richly coloured ivory-ground harshang (crab) main border is held between polychrome rosette guard and Baku type of colorful diagonal minor borders. This is an important instance of the harshang border being used in conjunction with a Zeyve field; in Ian Bennett’s  listing of all border patterns known for their use with a Zeyve field, the harshang is notable by its omission. The work also presents a lively and attractive use of colour.
