Kuba Perepedil double niche prayer rug Size (metric): 117x168cm Size (ft)): 3'10"x5'6" Area: 1.96m2 Density: 155 000 knots per square meter, totally ~ 300 000 knots Weaving period: 3 months Colors: madder red, yellow, green, old purple/mauve, midnight blue, medium blue, sky blue, ivory (undyed), dark brown (undyed), ochre, maroon, medium brown, apricot Dyes: 100% natural dyes: madder, weld (Reseda Luteola), woad and indigo, cochineal, onion skins, pomegranate skins, walnut husks, natural brown sheep wool, natural ivory sheep wool - all are eco-friendly and non-toxic Materials: all wool, handcarded and handspun wool for pile, ivory wool warps and ivory wool wefts (two shots) Ends: five rows of decorative knotted meshwork Weavers name: Zeyna Handwoven in Azerbaijan Design: A mihrab/niche have been woven into the ivory ground on top and bottom. On the central vertical axis, we see two octagons/göls which are surronded by four fabulous birds and four rams horns (three rams horns around the bottom one). Four stylized birds below the niche may represent the legendary Simurgh (ancient Iranian benevolent, mythical flying creature). Inside the spandrels (mihrabs), we see numerious tribal elements and animal figures. The main border carries grape leaf or crab (harshang) pattern. Dated and signed (woven). The narrower border contains diagonal striped "Pakhlava" (National Azeri layered pastry with walnut filling) motif. |
