Note the imaginative variety in the individual characteristics of each horse rider (smiling one, the one with mustache etc). The richly adorned trappings and presence of the domestic animals such as dogs and goats show that the procession is not a merchant’s caravan, but rather a nomadic tribe moving to their Yaylag (summer pastures). Each horseman holding a bird (perhaps a falcon) on his hand. A Sarvan or Caravanbashi - the caravan leader or cameleer is walking in front of the group, holding the ropes (örken) of the camels. The appearance of animals in vertical rows adds an intriguing three-dimensional quality to the composition. |
