The large "S" shapes pair in opposing colours in the central medallion or 'gül and are reminiscent of similar ornaments on Ersari Turkoman carpets; note that the forms are echoed in the 'swastika' at the centre of the rug. The medallion dominates the design of this small rug of its type and, at the ends, the palmettos are flanked by hypertrophied animal forms, interesting versions of an ancient Turkic rug design used in almost infinite variations throughout the centuries. The white-ground border, with its linked star-rosettes, is also typical of the group which, by virtue of its powerful design and strong, bright yet warm colours, ranks among the most desirable Caucasian rugs. |
