Antique Beshir Ersari carpet, c 1880

Code: WTBE01

Size: 185 x 330 cm

Size (ft): 6'0" x 10'10"

Structure: wool pile; wool warps and wefts.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: Beshir carpets were woven in the regions along the Amu Darya River, from Bukhara in Uzbekistan to northern Afghanistan. The main weaving area is Beshir town in Turkmenistan. Beshir carpets were woven by the weavers of the Ersari tribe of Turkmen Tribal Confederation.

In the field, the carpet bears a row of diamonds contoured by leaves.

Two of the diamond medallions are covered with a cross-shaped motif (probably a version of the motif which Moschkova refers to as Chunava, which is taken from the carpets of the Kyrgyz from the Fergana Valley, or in the case of Bogolyubov, the name is Jagal Bayli Göl (the Flying falcon)). The central medallion contains a small octagon containing tiny boteh motifs.

Beautiful main border ornaments made of alternating stylized serrated animal/dragon motifs.

Similar examples: Jourdan, Turkmen Carpets (1989), No. 284; the Beshir carpet from the Dr. Werner Loges Collection.

Condition: Good condition. Secured ends.
