A
rare antique Kuba Alpan / Seychour rug Code: WKUSEY23S Age: late 19th century Size: 117 x 173 cm Size (ft): 3'10" x 5'8" Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and ivory (in some areas dark brown) wool wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: This is a unique Kuba rug. Although the floral motifs inside the mihrab are frequently seen in a group of antique Kuba rugs, the curved and hooked horn motifs surrounding the mihrab and the mihrab itself are unique. At first glance, it reminds us of the curved medallion design in a group of 18th century Azerbaijani embroidery.
The bird motifs on the upper and lower parts of the middle ground are the same as the peacock motif used in southern Shirvan carpets. The rose motif used in the border is specific to regional carpets, but it is interesting that the motif is depicted in various forms and sometimes stylized boteh motifs are interspersed. The overall design is reminiscent of a group of Beshir Turkmen prayer rugs with a mihrab embellished with a ram's horn motif.
