Antique Kazak rug with hooked medallions

Age: c. 1870-80

Size
: 120x197cm

Size (ft): 4'0"x6'5"

Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and red wool wefts.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: This rare Kazak rug shows perfectly harmonious proportions and colors. The field has been divided into four box-shaped compartments separated by a surrounding "small crab" motif border frame. Alternately green or red, the rectangles each contain a hooked diamond enclosing a central cruciform and garmagly motifs as well as animals, birds and stars. The main border is decorated with polychrome kufic motifs (eternal knots). Well preserved natural colors, beautiful greens, yellows and blues. Good condition.
