OTTOMAN CARPETS IN THE XVIII CENTURY

Lot 48
A WEST ANATOLIAN DOUBLE-COLUMN PRAYER RUG
18TH CENTURY

Generally full pile, corroded red and brown with light wear, a few
light surface stains, partially repaired selvages, backed, overall very
good condition

7ft.10in. x 5ft.8in. (237cm. x 173cm.)
£8,000-12,000 US$12,000-18,000
€9,000-13,000

The design of this very attractive rug derives from a group of 17th-century
double column prayer rugs variously attributed to Ladik (Peter Bausback,
Antike Orientteppiche, Mannheim, 1978, p.70 and M.S. Dimand and Jean
Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973,
cat.138, p.246) and West Anatolia. The present example varies from the
earlier pieces in its bold floral minor stripes, which connects it to the rug
from the Bergi Andonian collection sold at Sotheby’s, New York, 19 May
2011, lot 48.
