OTTOMAN CARPETS IN THE XVIII CENTURY
XVIII century Anatolian kilim. This is an example of indigenous Anatolian weaving in the slit-tapestry technique. The main motif fs called "Parmakli "in Turkish meaning spread fingers. However; it is found on some of the earliest surviving artefacts from central Anatolia, including wall paintings at the 7th millennium site of Chatal Hoyuk. It has been interpreted as representing perhaps the sacred cave or grotto and, by extension, the womb, of the mother goddess. The design, also found on kilims from the Caucasus and Iran. |
