1.12 x 1.40 m (3'8"x4'7") Sotheby's, New York 13 December 1996. lot 43
Est: $2-3,000 Sold for: $8,625
Hali notes: "Surely not 18th century as catalogued,
this was bought by an Italian dealer in the room after a fierce battle
against a phone bidder. Illustrated only in murky black and while, in fact
the field colour went from red to a dark aubergine, while the 'kilim-slyle'
arabesque was not the usual yellow but rather a blue and blue-green, similar
to an 'Anatolian-style' Lotto in the Alexander Collection Hali 56 cover). It
has a beautiful, ragged palmette border of the type depicted on carpets in
many Italian Renaissance paintings (HALI 58, pp.95-98). The weave is fine,
with a firm handle typical of early Turkish rugs. Once some ugly faded
restorations down the centre have been dealt with, it should look great."
