Eastern Anatolian Turkish "Shield" rug, XVIII century.

This carpet was exhibited and published by ICOC during the Philadelphia conference in 1996, in Oriental Rugs from Atlantic Collections, p. 29, plate 29. According to Dennis Dodd, this "pattern was popular in the 16th century Ushak court ateliers and possibly earlier". He believes the design is derived from architectural Paradisiacal garden imagery. According to Dennis, the black/blue border suggests possibly a village in the Karaman region where these border colors were popular.
