Medallion Carpet, probably Erzurum or Sivas, late 18th century. Turk ve Islam Eserleri Museum, Istanbul. Acquired 24 March 1912. Inv. no. 751 (1411) from Haghia (Saint) Sophia (Ayasofya), Istanbul. 150 x 175 cm.

Red ground. The large white central medallion is surrounded by a hooked brown and yellow zig-zag outline. A red square in the medallion contains a rosette filled with yellow, green and purple with four large red and green rosettes with purple and  yellow elements emerging on the red stems. At each corner of the square a large leaf is flanked by a pair of purple leaves. Red, blue and purple rosettes outlined in brown are contained in the medallion. Above and below large white stylised palmettes are framed by two narrow yellow and blue bands and contain a small dark yellow palmette and purple and yellow filled rosettes. Around the medallion lie four dark yellow palmette and purple and yellow lozenges with serrated outlines and pairs of palmettes with blue, green and yellow petals. Rosettes and leaves of different colours decorated with dots are scattered over the field. In the corners a small tree is flanked by two animals or birds, a survival from the fourteenth century Anatolian Animal Carpets.
