ORIENTAL CARPETS 23 June 2006 New York, Rockefeller Plaza
Lot Description A BERGAMA RUG West Anatolia, First Half 19th
Century Approximately 5 ft. 10 in. x 5 ft. 1 in. (178 x 155 cm.)
Lot 96 The current lot is an unusual example from Western
Anatolia in the early 19th century. This rug demonstrates a distinguished
archaic design, especially in the anthropomorphic elements contained in
the stepped cruciform motifs as well as in the field. Although our Bergama
is slightly more privitive in drawing, it is similar to one published by
E.Herrmann, Von Lotto Bis Tekke, Seltene Orientteppiche Aus Vier
Jahrhunderten, Munich, 1978, pl.11. Another example can be seen in the
Exhibition catalogue, Divine Images and Magic Carpets: From the Asian Art
Collection of Dr. and Mrs. William T. Price, Texas, Amarillo Art Center,
1987, p. 45, pl. 34. The latter, also with the same cruciform design
delivers a different coloration overall. |
