This picture is one of the scenes of fashionable figures in luxurious interiors
which Netcher painted from the mid-1660s. The painting is indebted in some
degree to the artist's teacher, Gerard Terborch. As in The Suitor's Visit by
Terborch, Netcher himself appears to have served as one of the suitors here.
