Virgin Enthroned with Child and Angel
c. 1480
Oil on wood, 66 x 46,5 cm
Staatliche Museen, Berlin
By Hans Memling
(b. ca. 1440, Seligenstadt, d. 1494, Bruges)
This painting is generally accepted as a Memling although it is overrestored. The Child's pose is the typological match of the Virgin and Child in a Rose Garden in Madrid, with both examples deriving from a prototype of Rogier van der Weyden. The composition is closely related to the later Virgin Enthroned in St Osyth.
