Antique Karadagh  / Arasbaran long rug, Iranian Azerbaijan. 11 ft. (335 cm) x 48 in. (122 cm). Peter Pap Oriental Rugs

This dynamic Karadagh long-rug blends several features from eighteenth century Persian ‘harshang’ or crab design. Some of these have been creatively adapted to fit the more narrow proportions of this piece. The classic crab border is vibrantly drawn on an ivory ground. Within the indigo field an assortment of palmette forms are drawn in a multitude of colors. These elements derive from the smaller scale forms of ‘harshang’ design from larger carpets. Here they are masterfully reinterpreted as the major design elements of the field and their relationship and scale appear masterfully organic and harmonious.
