Karabagh rug with "Lampa" design, late 19th century. Azerbaijan

published in Ian Bennett's Oriental Rugs, Volume I, plate 132

Ian Bennett's notes: A typical Lampa-Karabagh design. The bird forms can be compared with those found on many north-west Persian/south Caucasian flat-woven animal-trappings, often attributed to the Shahsavan tribe. The border composition is similar to that found on 127, which rug is very close in overall composition to the present piece. Some of the colours may be synthetic. Late 19th/early 20th century 340 x 146 cm
