Antique Karabagh Cloudband rug, Azerbaijan. These three Manoyan Cloudband rugs (1, 2) can be attributed to the northern districts (south of Kazak or west of Ganja) rather than the traditional Cloudband weaving zone (Kalbajar-Lachin-Gorus), therefore the name "Cloudband Kazak" is correctly chosen here (rather than "Cloudband Karabagh").

Cloudband Kazak (Chondzoresk Kazak), Southwest Caucasus, circa 1880. Dimensions of the piece: 7'.0"x3'.10" (213x117 cm). The two green cloudband medallions have yellow swastika centres and small human figures, all on a rich madder red ground. The ivory calyx and slanted leaf border is appropriate to this type. The pile is thick and meaty. A small restoration is visible in the image and there are minor selvage problems, but the ends are original and the general condition is good.
