Antique Heriz rug, Azerbaijan, NW Iran

Rippon Boswell & Co. International Auctioneers of Rare Carpets & Textiles

Lot: 146
Heriz: The special feature of this antique Heriz rug is the large inscription cartouches that surround the rug in a wide, additional outer border. This feature suffices to prove that Heriz rugs were not exclusively made for export, as is often stated nowadays, since the Persian inscriptions (probably containing verses from Persian poetry) only made sense to Oriental viewers. – Original selvedges, both ends minimally reduced. Slight signs of wear in the pile.
Origin: North West Persia, Azerbaijan
Dimensions: 385 x 290 cm
Age: Late 19th century
Estimate: 9,500.00 €
