Karabagh Chelebi rug (Chelaberd, Sunburst, "Adler Kazak") rug

Size: 149x175cm

Size (ft): 4'10"x6'9"

Area: 2.60 m2

Density: 108 000 knots per square meter, totally ~280 000 knots

Colors: red, ivory, light green, midnight blue, medium blue, yellow, light brown, dark brown, maroon, rotal blue, aqua green, lawn green, olive gren.

Dyes: madder, weld (Reseda Luteola), onion skins, indigo, pomegranate skins, walnut husks, natural dark brown sheep wool, natural ivory sheep wool.

Materials: Handcarded and handspun wool for pile, ivory wool warps and light red wool wefts (two shots, dyed with madder and onion skins). 1cm of flatwoven kilim ends at both sides. - wool on wool

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Pile height: 0.7cm

Ends: Horizontal band of two-pick oblique interlacing warps. Braided fringes.

Weaver: Aynura

Weaving Period: Three months

Handwoven in Azerbaijan

Design: The design of the present example belongs to an exceptionally rare group of Chelaberd rugs. Four known antique examples which comprise this group and which spawned thousands of copies in the second half of the 19th century are

4. The red starburst medallion rug formerly in the James D. Burns Collection sold at Christie's 18th October 2001, lot 277.
