Antique Shirvan Medallion and Gubba rug

Age: circa 1870-80

Size
: 118x213cm

Size (ft): 3'10"x6'11"

Structure: wool pile,  (natural dark brown and ivory yarns twisted - "salt & pepper").

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description:  Four highly individualized stepped medallions create a powerful artistic impact in this highly sophisticated Shirvan masterwork. Note how the inner motifs of each central diamonds of the stepped medallions differ from each other.

A plethora of tribal motifs - squares with addorsed “C” guls, triangular hooked “garmagly” devices, eternal knots, archaic Shirvan Eresh kilim guls (facing birds), animals, eye motifs fill the midnight blue central field. All within a yellow serrated leaf and "calyx" variant main border and flower head motif minor borders
