Antique Shirvan Medallion and Gubba rug Code: SHMD06 Age: circa 1870-80 Size: 118x213cm Size (ft): 3'10"x6'11" Structure: wool pile, wool warps (natural dark brown and ivory yarns twisted - "salt & pepper"), cotton wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: Four highly individualized stepped medallions create a powerful artistic impact in this highly sophisticated Shirvan masterwork. The rug represents a well known type of Kuba-Shirvan carpet composition which has rows of stepped edged and conjoined hexagonal motifs arranged in a single vertical row, with a flattened, saw-edged medallion (gubba, gubpa) at either end of the row; the latter motif has been related by some authors to ancient Egyptian and Persian Royal insignia. Note the difference in shape between the top and bottom gubbas, also how the inner motifs of each central diamonds of the stepped medallions differ from each other. A plethora of tribal motifs - squares with addorsed Turkmen “C” guls, triangular hooked “garmagly” devices, eternal knots, archaic Shirvan Eresh kilim guls (facing birds), animals, eye motifs fill the midnight blue central field. The border carries "calyx & leaf" motif which can be found in early Anatolian and Caucasian rugs. All natural colors, good weaving quality, lustrous wool.
