Antique Shirvan Medallion & Gubba (Dome) (so called "Karagashli") rug with
an abrashed blue field Code: SHMD05 Age: 1880-1890 Size: 122x380cm Size (ft): 4'0"x12'5" Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and ivory wool wefts. Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical) Description: There is a very similar Shirvan long rug in Ian Bennett's Oriental Rugs, Volume I, plate 256: http://www.azerbaijanrugs.com/guide/kuba/kuba-shirvan-medallion/antique_caucasian_kuba_shirvan_medallion_rug148.htm Seven stepped-edge and conjoined hexagonal medallions arranged in a single vertical row, with two red gubbas (domes) at either end of the row. This serrated red medallion has been related to ancient Zoroastrian insignia by some authors. Various hooked, octagonal and squared motifs are placed in between the hexagonal medallions. All within a yellow ground main border with linked "S"/Dragon motifs, between a red ground flower head motif inner border and an outer border of "wheel" motif, separated by dark brown and ivory ‘barber’s’ pole guard stripes.
