Antique Afshar rug with boteh motifs

Code: AF01N

Age: late 19th century

Size
: 121x164 cm

Size (ft): 3'11"x5'4"

Structure: wool pile, ivory wool warps and ivory and red wool wefts. Note the lazy lines at the back of the rug where the weaver stopped using the ivory wefts, started to use the red ones. This is a feature which shows that this is an individual tribal rug.

Knots: Gördes (Turkish, symmetrical)

Description: The deeply lustrous navy blue field with a charming design showing the rows of botehs each containing tiny baby boteh, symbolizing the potential for life to sprout forth. This detail is a good example of the creativity of tribal weaving of Afshar pastoral nomads. Salmon main border of flower head motif between ivory floral meander minor borders. Good condition. All natural colors.
