"Lotto" Ushak carpet, second half  XVII century, Western Turkey, Ottoman Empire. Iparmuveszeti Muzeum (Museum of Applied Arts), Budapest. Inventory number: 8521. acquired from Count Sandor Teleki collection


Size: 114x160cm
Structure:
Warp: wool, Z25, ivory, ivory and brown, alternate warps (left ones) slightly depressed;
Weft: wool, 1Z, brick red (Rubia tinctorum L.), 2 shoots, "lazy lines".
Ends: bottom-cut, top - rest of blue and brick red striped wool kilim;
Sides: cut and rewoven;
Pile: wool, 2Z, seven colours: red (Rubia tinctorum L), yellow, blue 3 (indigo), greenish blue (indigo+?), brown (undyed), ivory;
Knots: ghiordes, horizontal: ca. 27/10 cm, vertical: ca. 27/10 cm ca. 729/dm2.
Pattern:
Field: on a red ground "Lotto" pattern in yellow, according to Ch.G.Ellis in "Kilim style";
Border: in the blue main stripe row of cartouches.
Condition: badly worn, outer guard stripe partly rewoven, design of the rewoven areas reconstructed by needlework.
Provenance: acquired from Count Sandor Teleki collection.
