"Lotto" carpet, second half XVII century, Western Turkey, Ushak Region, Ottoman Empire. Iparmuveszeti Muzeum (Museum of Applied Arts), Budapest. Inventory number: 24.461. Formerly Emil Delmar collection


Size: 120x166 cm
Structure:
Warp: wool, Z2S, ivory, ivory and brown, at the top ihe end of a number of warps dyed red, alternate warps (left ones) slightly depressed;
Weft: wool, 1Z, red-brown (Kerria lacca Kerr), 2 shoots, in the lower left corner "lazy line";
Ends: bottom: cut, top: ca. 6,5 cm of 1Z ochre wool kilim;
Sides: four cords with four warps, wool, 2Z, ochre, after each row of knots before the inner cord the weft turns back making a needlework effect on the surface of the selvages
Pile: wool, 2Z, seven colours: red 2 (Rubia tinctorum L.), ochre, blue 2 (indigo), brown (undyed), ivory;
Knots: ghiordes, horizontal: ca. 29/10 cm, vertical: ca. 26/10 cm, ca. 754/dm2.
Pattern
Field: on a red ground "Lotto" pattern in yellow, according to Ch.G.Ellis in "Kilim Style";
Border: in the blue main stripe row of cartouches.
Condition: upper right corner and several small holes rewoven, reknotted pans faded.
